How To Find The Right Child Care Situation For Your Child

If you and your spouse both work, you may at some point need the assistance of a daycare or childcare center. Finding the right center, though, is a big deal as this is somewhere that your child could be spending hours at every day after school. If you want to make sure you find a childcare service that is a good fit for your child and your family, here are some tips that might help.

Talk to the Staff But Watch the Staff Talk to the Children Too

When you go to a childcare center to see if it's right for your kid, you will obviously go in with a lot of questions. But don't get so caught up with talking to the staff yourself that you don't use this opportunity to watch how the staff is interacting with the children. Is the staff actively monitoring the children as they play? Is a staff member getting down on the floor with the kids when necessary, or do they seem more aloof? If a child misbehaves while you are there, how is it addressed? Pay special attention to any employees who has not been interacting with you directly before they speak to a child as this could give you a better idea of what the day-to-day experience is really like.

 Hone in on Discipline Policies

You probably have certain family policies that you use to instill discipline in your child. Your child might not be able to play until they do their homework, they might not get to eat sweets after a certain time of day, and so on. Ask the childcare center about their various policies and be sure to speak up if you disagree with any of them. Can the center accommodate your wishes? You should be reasonable here and not expect the childcare expert to give in to your every demand, but you want to leave the center feeling like it will be a positive experience for your child that will be similar to what they might get from you at home.

Show Up Unannounced

You can have a scheduled appointment if you like, but it might be better to then also come back a second time unannounced. When you get there, just tell the employees that you want to take a second look around. You don't need to stay long the second time, but you will want to look around and see if conditions are drastically different from your planned visit. Is the place still clean? Do the children still seem happy?
